Being environmentally aware does not mean you have to forfeit style. Decorate your home with the attitude of a set designer and spirit of a holiday window. Try this idea that doesn’t impose on a living tree.
Holiday Travel Arrangement
For floral designer Amanda Heer, stacking vintage suitcases into the shape of a tree is her favorite look. In fact, she finds the tree so appealing it remains intact all year ’round. “The tree has become a work of art,” Amanda says. Hard wardrobe cases and steamer trunks work best; you can find them at thrift stores or on eBay. Gather 12 to 15 and simply build into the shape of a tree. Old clocks can act as ornaments. Flameless candles are perfect for a holiday feel. Vintage coverless books bound with twine help to bring in the tree shape. Add gifts in natural burlap for Old World charm.
Everlasting Flame
Bid farewell to matches and carving into a wick that’s been swallowed up by wax. Flameless candles give the aura of candlelight without burning through expensive candles. “They are safe and look so real,” Amanda says. “Assemble in large clusters for greater impact.”
