3 Tips for Creating a Cozy Bedroom

A dark color palette can be the key to a cozy bedroom

Sage green shiplap and white bedding
Sage green paint is a unique update on the ubiquitous look of white shiplap.

Say what you will about the beauty and brightness of white, but deeper tones can provide an unparalleled level of coziness where it matters most, the bedroom. Here are four tips for using dark shades to create a cozy bedroom:

  1. Incorporate Contrast: Visual variety is key in any space.
In this room, white bedding pops against the muted background tones for a clean and crisp look.
The lace trim adds a feminine touch to balance the earthy hues surrounding the space.
  2. Layer Textures: Shiplap along the walls, the brown quilted bedspread and the bench’s weathered wood finish combine other for a richly detailed atmosphere.
Patterns created by color are limited to the ruddy tones in the rug, allowing the vintage piece to become a focal point that doesn’t have to compete for attention.
  3. Focus on Essentials: A truly relaxing space is also one that is free of clutter and distractions.
Darker tones have the effect of making a space feel enclosed, and too many objects in this environment could create a feeling of claustrophobia instead of coziness.

Cottage Bedroom Style that is Calm, Cool and Collected

Cottage Bedroom StyleBuilt in cabinets are a great way to contain clutter and add architectural interest to a room. In this cottage bedroom, the under-bed drawer holds a trundle bed for guests, but it could just as easily store winter sweaters, seasonal pillows and bedding, or a collection of toys and boardgames.

Another way to make sure a cottage bedroom is a relaxing place is to choose the right color scheme. The pale green on the walls works as a calming neutral in this room that grounds the pop of color from the bedding. Seasonal changes are easy to make, without disrupting the calm ambiance throughout.

Keep calm and carry on!

Quick Craft: Calming Lavender Linen Spray

A few ingredients are all you need for this quick and calming lavender spray!

Your bedroom is meant to be a place to relax and unwind. A warm, cozy bed is just one element of your ideal oasis. Certain scents, like lavender, can help make your room soothing and serene.

“Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is considered the most calming herb,” says Alexandra Haley, a family herbalist and detox specialist who owns the Claremont Healing House in Claremont, California. “It’s commonly used for conditions of nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, and quieting the mind and body.”

You can create a spray using lavender essential oil to add a calming scent to your pillows and linens.

What you’ll need:

  • Funnel
  • Spray bottle (I used a 2-ounce blue glass bottle)
  • Distilled water
  • Witch hazel
  • Lavender essential oil

What you’ll do:

  1. Use the funnel to fill the spray bottle ⅔ full with distilled water.
  2. Use the funnel to add witch hazel to fill the bottle to just below the neck.
  3. Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
  4. Screw on the top; then shake to mix the ingredients.
  5. Lightly spray on your linens.

Note: This made a lavender linen spray with a light, lingering scent. For a stronger scent, add the witch hazel to the bottle first, followed by the essential oil and the distilled water.

Daydream Bed

Learn how to turn your bed into the ultimate luxurious escape.

romantic bedroom

Want a luxurious, romantic escape where you can read a book or curl up for a nap? Turn your bedroom into a romantic getaway with these 4 tips:

  1. The fluffier, the better. What kind of bed makes you want to take a running leap and sprawl among the covers? It has to have a lot of plump pillows and a deep, comfortable bedspread or comforter. Get down-feathered items for a rich look that will make you long for bed every time you walk into the room.
  2. Set the mood with color. The color you choose in the bedroom will help set the mood. Bright colors are fun and peppy—they’ll put a bounce in your step. Dark colors are mysterious and amorous. While you can add romance with any color, pastel shades are the most romantic—they’ll bring a fresh air to the bedroom.
  3. Think sheer. Lace, silk and other translucent fabrics speak of romance and feminine luxury. Try sheer curtains, a lace-trimmed bed skirt or ruffles on a vanity seat cushion.
  4. Add a little sparkle. It doesn’t hurt to add a little glamor—especially if it’s in the form of a chandelier. Match the fixture with the colors of your bedroom for a cohesive look. If you can’t add a chandelier, drape a strand of sparkly beads over the side of a bedside lamp or headboard.
